Monday (Almost Didn’t) Made It!

During my student-teaching internship this spring I made a lot of resources. And when I say a lot, I mean a lot. I don’t know why I thought it’d be a good idea to literally re-invent the wheel during internship, especially during an internship that my husband was also completing, while having a 2.5 year old, and commuting 90 minutes each way (totally serious — it happened). But I did!

This meant a lack of sleep for the months between December and May, but it has yielded great satisfaction since — especially in preparing for my own classroom and curriculum! One of my more lackluster projects was posters for the basic science process skills. Yes, folks, they were sad.

In searching for something else on Google Drive (P.S. thank you Google for that, it is a lifesaver!) I came across the original files and decided they needed a makeover immediately. And most importantly? This needed to be like Skittles (taste the rainbow) exploded all over them. What’s better than science? Bright, colorful science that makes you smile.

Thanks to some clipart from some of my favorite people on the internet (check them out on the sidebar), I made over my process skills posters in a very Oz-like fashion.

Oh yes… much, much better.

But that wasn’t enough for me on what is now my first Monday (oh my word, it’s 10:20pm!) Made It. I decided to print them (thank you, Canon) and laminate them (thank you, Scotch) and hang them (thank you Staples). And in doing so, I discovered a little shortcut to hole-punching accurately that I’m sure all of you pros already know!

Reinforcers. Yep.

All I did was measure where I wanted to make my initial punches, put the sticky reinforcers down, and then guide the hole punch right over it. It made it so easy to create a template to do all of the other posters with, and in literally ten minutes I had this:

Bam! Instant science-happiness.

So, it’s Monday. And I made it.

Thrifty and Full of Rainbows!

One of the most daunting things for me in preparing for my first year is that, as a family, we’re also preparing for my husband’s first year! Finding things for our classroom — books, manipulatives, materials, furniture — on the cheap isn’t just a sport (it totally is for me!) it’s a necessity. Luckily, we have a good track record with the Goodwill (and love their 20%-off coupons) and our Target Dollar Spot is well-stocked!

Earlier in the week we stopped by the Goodwill to peruse their bookshelves for some more books for our classroom libraries, and spied something in the middle of all of the furniture they were selling. It looked like an easel, but wasn’t unfolded and had crayon and tape all over it. I saw the price tag of $9.99 and decided that for $10, I could put some elbow grease into it and fix it up!

We got it home (thanks to some creative placement in the car), cleaned it up, and there she is, in all her glory:

I looked her up and she retails for around $100, so not bad at all. This will go in my classroom to anchor our meeting area, so I’m debating about whether to leave her as-is, or paint her. I spied some ruby-slipper spray paint in Hobby Lobby the other day, so I’m tempted. Very, very tempted.

Today on our grocery run to Target I spotted a cart in front of us with bins that looked suspiciously sturdy and rainbow-y. I asked the very nice woman where she saw them, and I must have asked a little too excitedly because she smiles and says, “Teacher, huh?” Yes. Where, oh where did you find them?

The Dollar Spot (though only the buckets were $1; the bins and caddies were $2.50 each). Usually that’s our first stop, but it was too close to the Lego aisle to brave today before naptime. I high-tailed it over there and scored these:

During our last trip to Target I noticed they were taking down the seasonal section and prepping it for what looked like Back-to-School and I was totally right. Of course I couldn’t help but check there too, and sure enough, there were some goodies to behold! My favorite?

I got five packs — all that they had.

And then… there was this (my heart may or may not have stopped).

My husband brought it to my attention, which I’m sure he now regrets as I’m plotting a way to justify buying a pack or two of each. These are 8-packs of “themed” crayons… perfect, right? I was standing in front of it and literally felt a TPT unit incorporating these flash before my eyes. Pirate crayon pack? Check. Dinosaur crayon pack? Double check. Cupcake crayon pack? Triple check.

I somehow managed to only leave with the “Glitterati” crayons, despite Crayola trying to trick me into buying an 8-pack of primary colors with their Oz-marketing. Like I said, school supplies = kryptonite.

Everything, all-told, was under $50. Phew. I’m slowly but surely putting everything together to create Oz on a budget I can live with. There are some other things I’ll need, but I need to get into my classroom and assess it before I make any bigger purchases. (Please let there be a rug. Please let there be a rug. Please let there be a rug. Oh, and a kidney table.)

Where to Start?

After five years of researching, reflecting, observing, practicing, reflecting again, and so forth in the course of earning two degrees… it’s a little daunting to start with a blank slate. As a first-year teacher it seems the “to-do” list is a mile-long and kind of functions as laundry does: the longer you stare at it, the more it multiplies.

So where do I start? Well, like any good organizer, I am starting by going through the last five years of my life — in the form of manipulatives, Dollar Store finds, books, notebooks filled with research articles… and organizing it. De-cluttering, donating, and yes, even throwing some things out (do I really need to save the warped sheet protector when I literally have 1,000 others?).

After that is accomplished (and it will be no small feat, with some aspects — like cataloging our classroom library — on-going), the real work begins.

I sat down to think about what I want my students to feel when they walk into my classroom on the first day of school. What do I want to feel, as the teacher? What do I want my first classroom to feel like, look like, and function as?

Quite simply, I want it to be Oz.

The thing about Oz is that for as magical as it looks and feels, the real magic happens from within. As cheesy as it sounds (and I do realize it sounds beyond cheesy), the tin-man, scarecrow, and lion had the very attributes they were seeking all along and my students will, too. They’ll all be authors and scientists and mathematicians and historians and good citizens when they walk in the door… they just might not know it yet.

So, then, it becomes my job to create an environment in which they feel like they can learn and grow and take bigger risks than they ever have before.

At the top of my “to-do” list, right after “stop looking like an episode of Hoarders: New Teacher Edition” is this: CREATE OZ.

No problem, right? L. Frank Baum might’ve had his own imagination, but I’ve got Pinterest, Teachers Pay Teachers, spray paint, Mod Podge, a laminator (I never leave home without it!), iced coffee, pacing guides, scope & sequence, and just about two months. All that’s missing is my very own pair of ruby slippers (don’t worry, I have a Google alert setup so if any size 11’s show up I’m good to go).

I think the deck is stacked in my favor! (But that’s not to say I wouldn’t like a leg-up. So, all of you veterans out there — what do you wish someone had told you to do first in the weeks leading up to your first first-day of school?)
